Frequently asked questions
Do I need a financial advisor?
Most people can benefit from partnering with an advisor. Signs you may need one include if you lack clarity about your financial goals, face growing tax bills, feel anxious about market downturns or are uncertain about how life changes may impact your financial future. Financial advisors can provide personalized guidance, strategic tax planning and stability during market volatility, and they can help you make informed decisions during major life changes.
What key attributes should I look for in an advisor?
When looking for a financial advisor, consider their transparency, expertise and focus on delivering actionable advice you can understand and use. They should be upfront about their costs, possess a deep understanding of financial planning and market trends, and prioritize your best interests. Look for advisors who will partner with you to offer personalized guidance and, perhaps most importantly, you are comfortable working with.
How much money do I need in investments to work with an advisor?
The fees associated with investing and financial planning can seem opaque. But the right advisor should be upfront about their costs—typically a percentage of the assets they manage for you, though fee structures vary. Many advisors also have a minimum investment requirement. At TIAA, you can access a dedicated wealth management financial advisor if you have $250K or more in assets outside of your employer-sponsored retirement plan. This includes access to tools, research and investment opportunities typically not available without an advisor relationship.
