PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Received the TIAA Paul A. Samuelson Award for "Are Americans Saving 'Optimally' for Retirement" (with Ananth Seshadri and Surachai Khitatrakun, Journal of Political Economy, August 2006).
  • Research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
  • Published extensively in leading economics journals, including The American Economic Review, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Review of Economic Studies.

John Karl Scholz is dean of the College of Letters & Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and the Nellie June Gray Professor of Economic Policy. He joined the university’s department of economics in 1988. Scholz also has served as deputy assistant secretary for tax analysis at the U.S. Treasury Department, and as a senior staff economist at the Council of Economic Advisors.

His research and publications have addressed household saving, the earned income tax credit and low-wage labor markets, financial barriers to higher education, and bankruptcy laws. He earned his B.A. from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
