Higher education is infrastructure: Taking the long view to align institutional mission with operations

Two aspects of higher education institutions—mission and financial sustainability—are frequently in tension. Attention to business matters can negatively affect employees’ commitment to the institutional mission—making it harder to recruit and retain a dedicated higher education workforce. Resolving this tension can help build trust with employees and the broader public as well.

Colleges and universities would benefit from taking a more expansive view of their own missions. They aren’t just higher education institutions. They’re examples of infrastructure [and] the public tends to see infrastructure as something that deserves support.
